The founder of Tron and CEO of BitTorrent, Justin Sun placed the highest bid ever in Warren Buffett’s annual charity auction at $4.57 million USD – to scoop up dinner with Buffett himself. a dinner that has been provided to the highest bidder for charity since 2000 raising over $32 million for the Glide Foundation to serve the homeless and addicted in San Francisco. The 28 year old is set to meet Buffett at Smith and Wollensky’s in Manhattan, and said he would invite seven cryptocurrency industry leaders to join the event.
Warren Buffett, famous oracle of Omaha and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway has famously state publicly that he sees no intrinsic value in Bitcoin- the largest cryptocurrency in the world and that it is ‘rat poison squared’ at his most recent annual shareholders’ meeting. Buffett said that Bitcoin is like betting on zero or double-zero on a Las Vegas roulette wheel. However he has stated that he does see the potential value in the blockchain technology that underlines it. It will be interesting to see if Sun can convince him at all otherwise.
Tron launched in 2017 with an ICO that raised $70 million making Sun an overnight multi millionaire. However Sun was also an early investor in Tesla and bitcoin while studying for his Masters degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Most recently he has started Peiwo, a foray into social media with an app much like Vine – giving users 10-second audio samples.
In a statement provided by his assistant, Buffett said “I’m delighted with the fact that Justin has won the lunch and am looking forward to meeting him and his friends. We are going to have a good time and Glide will use his contribution to help many thousands of people.”
Last year’s winning bid was $3.3 million.
